Beware an open cut or break in the skin. You could be inviting a staph infection to develop. While staph infections are not life threatening in most cases, more serious complications can arise if they are not treated post haste.

Staph is the common term but it's medical term is Staphylococcus. It is bacteria which commonly lives on the skin and is harmless in this environment.

A certain strain of staph infection, known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, is problematically resistant to a broad spectrum of antibiotics, except for a very small few of the most powerful ones.

The best way to prevent a staph infection is simply by keeping yourself clean. Wash your hands often and bathe yourself several times a week. If you have cuts or wounds clean them well, apply antibiotic creams or lotions and cover them.

If you suspect someone else has it do not roll or spar with them and advise them to get treatment. Always take a shower after workout and scrub thoroughly with an antimicrobial soap, if a staph outbreak is present in your gym you may want to consider using a surgical scrub.

Avoid sharing personal items including towels and razors. These items can carry staph bacteria and can transfer it from one person to another.

The common staph infection cure consists in the administration of an antibiotic ointment on the skin lesions. Such medication can be purchased without prescriptions but you should know that oral antibiotics often complement the treatment.

Encourage good hygiene. Students should be cautioned against sharing water bottles and personal items, encourages to shower after gym classes and other physical activities.

Fortunately, most staph infections can still be treated with the normal cocktail of antibiotics. But, if things are following its normal trend, it'll be a matter of time before they'll be able to resist our strongest antibiotic.
