Know about Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow affects people who are in the age group of 35-65 years, usually associated with a pain on the outside of the elbow.The term Tennis elbow is medically known as lateral epicondylitis. It is an inflammation of the tendons that attach the forearm to the arm bone, the usual stress point is around the elbow, and hence the term tennis elbow.

As a tennis player, you can expect that you might be afflicted with tennis elbow. Fortunately, there are some treatments that can cause a lot of relief. Of course, if you get tennis elbow, the most important thing that you can do is rest your arm.

Tennis Elbow is described as pain in the lateral elbow (outsides of the elbow if arm is straight with palms up) due to tendinitis at the muscle-tendon-bone junction of the common extensor tendon and lateral epicondyle of the humerus bone.

Some of the most common treatment options for tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis include:

Trim abnormal tendons 3-4 cm
Release tendon from bone
Ossatripsy

Tennis elbow treatment methods are just as varied as are the ways of developing tennis elbow. Your family physician may refer you to a physiotherapist for some temporary pain relief but the truth of the matter is that you don’t have to spend your hard earned cash on endless trips to the physiotherapists or doctors.

Tennis elbow, also called lateral epicondylitis, is an inflammation with soreness, or pain on the outside of the upper arm close to the elbow. There may or may not be a partial tear of the tendon fibers, which connects the muscle to the bone, at or near the outside of the elbow.

If you are suffering from a throbbing pain from your elbow from any of these activities, there are some home treatments you can use. First of all, it won't seem like it at first but ice will help a lot.

Acupuncture. Once no progress was achieved with physio I took a course of acupuncture each week.

Rest. After several months of frustration I set aside 1 month where I would play no tennis.

Elevation: Whenever you can, try to elevate your injured arm—this will help keep your arm from additional pain and swelling due to too much blood in the injured place. Lifting your arm reduces the amount of blood flowing through the arm.

Treating tennis elbow may consume at least three to six weeks. Taking adequate rest and avoiding over use of elbow during the treatment period would help a lot. The first treatment of tennis elbow includes limiting the extended activities elbow; to achieve this, the physicians use a splint that immobilizes the wrist.

Acupuncture can be a very effective treatment for tendinitis, either as an adjunct to standard Western treatments or on its own.

Let your doctor know if you notice anything unusual such as significant swelling, bruising and pain in the joint, wrist or arm. If you have trouble carrying heavy objects without hurting your arm, or elbow pain that occurs at night or when you are at rest and not even using the arm.
