Testicular cancer is when malignant cancer cells are found in one or both of the testicles. The testicles are located behind the penis and are encased in a sac called the scrotum.

Causes of testicular cancer

The exact causes of testicular cancer are not known completely and are still a matter of research and analysis. However, the risk of testicular cancer is more for people who have a testicle that has failed to descend. Genes/ family history is generally quoted as another cause of testicular cancer.

The cancer can sometimes also be a combination of both cancers, and are called mixed germ-cell tumors.

Several types of germ cell tumors may exist inside a man's testicles. Cancer of the testicles is largely divided into two types, Seminomas and nonseminomas. Testicular seminomas are more susceptible to radiation therapy and with treatment the cure rate is more than 90% on all stages.

The first sign is usually a firm, painless, smooth testicular mass which is sometimes accompanied by a feeling of heaviness in the testicles. Other symptoms of testicular cancer include: a feeling of swelling in the scrotum, discomfort or pain in the scrotum, ache in the lower back etc.

Testicular cancer is definitely not life-threatening, if it is caught in the early stages. Nevertheless about 400 people, out of the 8000 people suffering from testicular cancer die annually, just because they have disregarded the symptoms and have attributed the testicular pain to other reasons.

While testicular cancer affects more Caucasian men than any other race, people of all ethnic backgrounds should know as much about testicular cancer as possible.
