Urinary Tract Infection - An Overview

By alisha smith at 2010-02-16 05:51:19
Urinary tract infection, or UTI, is colonization of microorganisms in the urinary tract in such an amount and such a way that damages or symptoms are produced. When only the urethra and the bladder is affected, it is called lower urinary tract infection.

If a urinary tract infection is left untreated, pain will become significantly worse and you could risk greater complications to your body including severe kidney problems. But what should you choose for a treatment? Antibiotics or treating the urinary tract infection naturally?

In most cases, UTIs are the result of bacteria, such as E. coli that make their home in your urinary tract and bladder. This bad bacteria (E. coli) is usually fought off by a healthy immune system. However, E. coli can spread when immunity is lower and a UTI can result.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a result of bacteria (typically E. Coli) nesting in the urinary tract which includes the kidney, bladder or urethra. Normally, a healthy body can fight off the bacteria which causes UTI.

Women are most at risk of developing a UTI. Pregnant women are at increased risk of having a bladder infection progress and develop into a kidney infection. About 40% of women and 12% of men have a urinary tract infection at some time in their life.

Acute urinary tract infection can be diagnosed by first collecting urine in a sterilized bottle through suprapubic aspiration, urethral catheterization, especially in females, or by voided urine (washing of the genital area before voiding is required to prevent contamination).

Generally, medications known for their properties of bacteria killing and inflammation relieving (mostly antibiotics) are prescribed for treating urinary tract infections. Personal hygiene and good health habits helps in prevention/early relief from urinary tract infections.

Once you are diagnosed with urinary tract infection, your doctor will most probably prescribe antibiotics for you. Antibiotics are really a good way to cure urinary tract infection as it kills the bacteria that is causing the infection.

Unfortunately, millions of people who once suffered from urinary tract infections will also suffer from a loss of bladder control, also called urinary incontinence. Not to mention, that over time the bacteria will become resilient to the antibiotics.

A person afflicted with male urinary tract infection usually experiences dysuria or commonly known as pain during urination, fever, chills, back/flank pain, suprapubic pain, and nausea and vomiting.

The antibiotic options include a myriad of prescription antibiotics that require a visit to the doctor's office. While antibiotics are typically effective in treating the UTI, many times they are not. And, unfortunately, the antibiotic option can cause side effects as detrimental as the UTI itself.

Why does the natural remedy for UTI work? This natural UTI remedy has been around for centuries and works for a couple reasons. 1.) Bacteria typically dies in acidic environments. Think about why Vitamin C also named ascorbic ACID is so effective for a healthy immunity.

Acids- Acids are used in numerous ways to promote healthy living! For instance, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) promotes a healthy immune system. And folic acid (vitamin B12) promotes the repair and production of cells.

Finally, you should also learn how to keep your urinary tract balanced and always healthy! Unfortunately, many people think that drinking cranberry juice by the gallon will help flush their urinary tract.
